I am a fully qualified medical practitioner (GP) who graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Flinders University having also completed a Bachelor of Science from the University of Adelaide (1992). I have also been awarded my Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and have undertaken extensive post-graduate studies in Nutritional and Integrative Medicine. I am a Member of both the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) and the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association (AIMA) and I am the Vice-President on the Board of AIMA.
My professional work and undergraduate studies have offered me varied experiences prior to founding the Centre for Health and Wellbeing, and these included working: as a GP in both a rural setting in Mannum on the Murray River and in a number of practices in urban Adelaide; in a Youth Health Centre called The Second Story; with homeless youth in the inner city; as a final year medical student in rural Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom and on an Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory.
In addition to my professional life, I am involved in the promotion and representation of Integrative medicine as the Vice President of the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association (AIMA). In my personal life I have a wonderful partner, and my passions are personal development and spiritual growth, health and fitness. I founded a “Women’s wisdom circle” 15 years ago and we meet monthly and have an annual retreat together. I have personally explored a number of spiritual traditions and have stayed for a time in Sai Baba’s ashram in India. I have also completed a training program in rebirthing/breathwork and have gone on to assist in trainings and complete a train the trainer course.
I know that the things most important to me in my life are living in alignment with my Higher purpose, connecting deeply with others and continuing to learn and expand my own consciousness. My mission is to truly influence the way medicine is practiced so that more people can have the health and happiness they deserve. My philanthropic aspirations are to contribute to microfinance projects in developing countries and to animal welfare organisations.
I founded the Centre for Health and Wellbeing in 2005 as I wished to offer a form of medicine which has its total approach based in 'Integrative Medicine' - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing for people through a team of like minded practitioners who work in an integrated fashion. The Centre has grown from strength to strength and now has 9 Doctors, 3 Psychologists and 1 Chiropractor and is known as the pre-eminent Centre for integrative care in Adelaide.
My philosophy for health care reflects my belief that true healing involves much more than simply 'managing symptoms'. I practice in a way which determines the underlying causes for ill health by focusing on imbalances in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of your life. I then work with you to determine a program of health care which allows your body to heal itself using natural 'tools' including dietary change, nutritional and herbal supplements, bio-identical hormone therapy and stress management strategies, as well as conventional medicine as required. I discuss your results and treatment with you in detail so that you can come to understand your own body and learn how to maintain your own health and wellbeing. Using this approach I am able to address your health issues in an integrated way including:
Women's Health: pre-menstrual symptoms, menopause, osteoporosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, breast health and general health
Men's Health: prostate issues, male andropause, low libido, general health
Children's Health: mood disorders, food sensitivities, asthma, eczema, poor digestion, recurrentinfections
General Health: blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, arthritis, irritable bowel, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia
Mental Health: depression, anxiety, bipolar mood disorder, psychosis, drug and alcohol withdrawal.
I look forward to assisting you as we re-create your natural state of health and wellbeing.
For your first appointment please bring with you:
A brief outline of your medical history
The results of any investigations or specialist consultations relevant to your current health problem.
A list of any medications and nutritional supplements you are taking (it is actually helpful if you bring the bottles with you so we can check the actual amounts of the various nutrients in the supplements you are taking, as it is impossible to keep track of all the different formulations available).
A 3 day example of your normal diet and exercise routines
If you have been very ill please arrange for your partner or primary care-giver to attend with you for these sessions. It is important that they understand the program being developed for you and the rationale behind it so they can assist you in your efforts to reclaim your health.
